Gotabaya Rajapaksa has fled Sri Lanka ahead of his expected resignation as president

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has fled Sri Lanka on a military jet, amid mass protests over its economic crisis.

The country's air force confirmed the 73-year-old flew to the Maldives with his wife and two security officials.

They arrived in the capital, Male, at around 03:00 local time (22:00 GMT), BBC Sinhala understands.

Mr Rajapaksa's departure ends a family dynasty that has ruled Sri Lanka for decades.

He had been in hiding after crowds stormed his residence on Saturday, and had The president had earlier pledged to resign on Wednesday 13 July.

A source told the BBC that Mr Rajapaksa will not remain in the Maldives and intends to travel on to a third country.

His brother, former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, has also left Sri Lanka and is said to be heading to the US.

As Sri Lankans awoke to news of the president's departure, thousands of people took to the streets of the capital, Colombo. Many gathered at Galle Face Green, the city's main protest site. Some listened to fiery speeches at a makeshift stage set up for ordinary people to take the mic.

Punctuated by cries of "Victory to the struggle", the rallying cry of the protest movement, speakers railed against a government and the leaders they feel have failed them.

Others were furious about Mr Rajapaksa's departure, seeing a lack of accountability.

"We don't like it. We want to keep him. We want our money back! And we want to put all the Rajapaksas in an open prison where they can do farm work," said protester GP Nimal.

But 23-year-old university student Reshani Samarakoon told the BBC that the former president's exile offered "hope that in the future we can eventually become a developed country, economically and socially".

Sri Lankans blame President Rajapaksa's administration for their worst economic crisis in decades.

For months they have been struggling with daily power cuts and shortages of basics like fuel, food and medicines.

The leader, who enjoys immunity from prosecution while he is president, is believed to have wanted to flee abroad before stepping down to avoid the possibility of arrest by the new administration.

Sri Lanka: The basics

  • Sri Lanka is an island nation off southern India: It won independence from British rule in 1948. Three ethnic groups - Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim - make up 99% of the country's 22 million population.
  • One family of brothers has dominated for years: Mahinda Rajapaksa became a hero among the majority Sinhalese in 2009 when his government defeated Tamil separatist rebels after years of bitter and bloody civil war. His brother Gotabaya, who was defence secretary at the time, is the current president but says he is standing down.
  • Presidential powers: The president is the head of state, government and the military in Sri Lanka but does share a lot of executive responsibilities with the prime minister, who heads up the ruling party in parliament.
  • Now an economic crisis has led to fury on the streets: Soaring inflation has meant some foods, medication and fuel are in short supply, there are rolling blackouts and ordinary people have taken to the streets in anger with many blaming the Rajapaksa family and their government for the situation.

Hey people,

I've been checking out the world of online gaming lately, and
I’ve gotta say — it’s surprisingly fun. At first,
I was super skeptical. I mean, how do you even believe in an online
platform with your hard-earned money, right? But after spending hours researching (and
trying out a few sketchy sites so you don’t have
to), I figured out a few things that separate a legit casino from a complete fraud.
First off, if you’re new to all this, here’s
the golden rule: **regulation is key**. If a
casino doesn’t have a proper regulatory certificate (like from the MGA or the UK Gambling Commission), just
close that tab. No bonus is worth the risk of never seeing
your funds again. Also — and I know no one wants to — read the T&Cs.
That’s the only way to know what kind of hidden traps
they’ve slapped onto those so-called “juicy” bonuses.

Now, let me share a site I’ve been using these last few weeks.
It’s been a breath of fresh air. The interface? Super clean. Payouts?
Quick — like 24 hours quick. And the game selection? *Insane*.
Slots, live dealers, blackjack, even some oddball options I hadn’t tried before.
Check it out here: mobile
casino pay with phone
What really won me over was the customer service.
I had a tiny issue with a bonus not working, and they got
back to me in like instantly. Compare that to other sites where you’re
just left hanging — yeah, not worth it.

Also, if you’re into bonuses (and who isn’t?), this place
offers some juicy ones. But here’s the trick: don’t just
go crazy over promos. It’s smarter to get clear terms than a huge bonus you’ll never be able to withdraw.
I’m not saying you should go and drop your rent
money — please don’t. But if you’ve
got a little extra fun budget and you’re looking for a bit of
online excitement, online casinos can totally deliver. Just stay
sharp, know your limits, and don’t treat it like a side hustle.
It’s for fun, not for a paycheck. Anyway, just wanted to
drop my experience here in case anyone’s interested or trying to find a decent place
to play. If you’ve got your own go-to sites or even some wild losses,
I’m all ears — love talking shop about this stuff.

Good luck out there, and spin smart, win big ??

Payouts? No waiting around. And the game selection? *Wild*.

I had a tiny issue with a bonus not working, and they
got back to me in like no time. Compare that to other sites where you’re just ghosted by support — yeah,

Also, if you’re into bonuses (and who isn’t?),

But if you’ve got a little extra cash and you’re looking for a fun way to unwind,
online casinos can totally deliver. Just keep your head

Hey folks,

I've been getting into the world of online casinos lately, and I’ve gotta say — it’s way more exciting than I

the trouble of never seeing your funds again. Also — and I know no one wants to — read
the T&Cs. That’s the only way to know what kind of wagering requirements
they’ve slapped onto those so-called “generous”
bonuses.

Now, let me share a site I’ve been hooked on these last few weeks.
It’s been a total win. The interface? Super smooth.
Payouts? Fast as hell. And the game selection? *Massive*.
Slots, live dealers, blackjack, even some unique stuff I hadn’t

I had a tiny issue with a bonus not working, and they got back to me in like instantly.

Also, if you’re into bonuses (and who isn’t?), this place offers some juicy ones.
But here’s the trick: don’t just chase bonuses.
It’s smarter to go for fair terms than a huge
bonus you’ll never be able to withdraw. I’m not saying you should go and drop your rent
money — please don’t. But if you’ve got a little extra fun budget and you’re looking for
a bit of online excitement, online casinos can totally deliver.
