1941-1945 წლების დიდ სამამულო ომს 300 ათასი ქართველის სიცოცხლე შეეწირა. 1945 წლის 8 მაისს გერმანიის მიერ კაპიტულაციის გამოცხადების შემდეგ მეორე მსოფლიო ომი დასრულდა, 9 მაისი კი, ფაშიზმზე გამარჯვების დღედ გამოცხადდა.
